Here's all the info regarding Oblique:

From Alan Draven, author of BITTERNEST and NOCTURNAL OFFERINGS, writing as Neal Vandar, comes the exciting thriller OBLIQUE...

A man has dinner at a restaurant with a woman he hasn’t seen in twenty-five years. Before they order their food, he goes to the basement washroom. When he returns ten minutes later, the patrons and staff are seemingly all dead. No signs of struggle or traces of blood anywhere. He panics and flees the scene.

Following an encounter with a group of bullies, his paranoia reaches soaring levels. Exhausted and afraid to go back home, he seeks refuge at a motel on the edge of the city for the night. When he awakens the next day, he finds himself in a completely different town, clueless as to how he arrived there. After meeting a man whose past might be linked to his, he uncovers some information that sends him on a wild quest in an attempt to get to the bottom of an incident that occurred a quarter-century ago.

He’ll be chased, shot at, lied to, and drawn into a web of mystery and confusion as he seeks the truth—and does his best not to get killed in the process.

Time for "The Chilling Hour"...

It's Thursday! Free short story time! Today I give you one of my personal favorites, starring one of my favorite characters I've created, Nick Kubrick. Nick is a horror DJ who investigates and debunks supernatural myths in his spare time in the foggy city of Bitternest, Louisiana. He would go on to star in his own novel, Nocturnal Offerings, a few years later. Originally published in 2008 in the "9 of Swords" e-zine and reprinted in my first collection, The Bitternest Chronicles, in 2010, here is "The Chilling Hour." Enjoy and I'll see you back here next Thursday.

Time to run an "Errand"...

Well, look at that; it's Thursday! It must mean it's time for another free short story. This week I've picked "The Errand"; a story about a man who goes through the woods of Bitternest to run an errand and will see the course of his life changed forever. It was first published in 2008 in the Darkened Horizons Vol. 4 anthology and later reprinted in my first collection, The Bitternest Chronicles in 2010.

Are you enjoying these weekly free stories? Is anyone reading/downloading them at all? The Internet sometimes feels like a vacuum where we put stuff and no one sees or cares for it. If you do enjoy them, feel free to drop me a line; it's always appreciated.

Here's the link to read online/download the PDF. See you next week for a fifth free short story!

It's FREE story time!

For our third week of free short stories, I've selected a strange little story about a strange little motel. It's titled "Hershell's Motel" and that's all I'll say about it to keep the mystery. It was originally published in the Bonded By Blood anthology in 2008. The tale was later reprinted in my first short story collection in 2010, The Bitternest Chronicles. You will find it here in PDF to download or read online. Enjoy and I'll see you back here next Thursday!

Time for another FREE short story...

It's Thursday so it must be time for another FREE short story! This is of one of my most beloved (and one of my very first) short stories that was published as part of the now defunct Amazon Shorts series back in 2007 titled "The Bypassed Mind." This romantic suspense/fantasy story with some hypnosis thrown in for good measure was directly inspired by the late, great Richard Matheson's novel Bid Time Return also known as the film "Somewhere in Time" starring Christopher Reeve and Jane Seymour. You can download the FREE PDF or read it online right here. Enjoy!

A FREE short story every week leading to OBLIQUE...

Time for an update! I have some good news and bad news. The bad news is that for those of you who wanted a print copy of my upcoming book Oblique, it’s not gonna happen. After giving it much thought, considering the current publishing landscape and the ever dwindling sales of print books, there’s just not enough reward versus investment to warrant a physical copy of a fiction book in this day and age for me at this stage of my career. So the book will be available in .mobi (Kindle), epub (Kobo) and PDF formats so it should cover most of the digital media out there.

Now for the good news. Leading up to the release day of Oblique in late September, every Thursday I’ll be putting up a FREE short story of mine for download to whet your appetite. There will be eight of them in total, all taken from my two collections, The Bitternest Chronicles and Spooky Showcase. If you own those books then you already have them all. They will be unedited, meaning the original version that appeared in those books (not gonna pull a George Lucas on you and start rewriting them). Following that, I’ll be making available my five novellas also at the tune of one a week and they’ll be for sale on Amazon on Kindle, or in PDF directly through me for the modest sum of a dollar each. How cool is that!

So for the first week, I chose Breaking and Entering, which was originally published in NexGen Pulp Magazine way back in 2008, and reprinted in 2010 in The Bitternest Chronicles. It was also adapted as a short film directed by Jonathan Dubsky and written by yours truly. It’s the story of a man who enters people’s homes just for kicks, never stealing anything, just to see what goes on behind close doors. One day he’ll stumble upon something that will change his life forever… You can download the PDF or read the 13 page short story online at this link.
